New Year's resolutions and the Perimeter of the Store - Food Matters January 2016

With the coming of the new year, many of us focus our resolutions on losing the extra weight we carry and maintaining a healthy life style. Without pontificating on all the programs we all can consider, one truth likely can and should be incorporated in all our diets - even for those who have no weight to lose. The Mayo Clinic Staff (August 6, 2014) say it best:

"Picture your favorite grocery store. Chances are the fresh produce section, the meat and seafood departments, and the dairy case are all located around the perimeter of the store. This is where you should concentrate most of your shopping time. Why? Fresh foods are generally healthier than are the ready-to-eat foods found in the middle aisles. This helps you better control the fat and sodium in your diet."

And great quality and unique food ingredients, through healthy cooking techniques reducing oils and sugars, more robust flavor that satiates hunger with smaller portions, and the nutritional benefits of fresh and artisnal meats, fish, poultry, and produce can play a major role in an improved and/or weight-loss diet.
