Colorado Freestone Peaches from the Grand Valley are the best, simply because they’re ripe, sweet and loaded with chin-dripping juice. These are the large fancy fruits not found at stores. The Grand Valley’s hot days and cool nights are perfect for bringing out the natural sugars in the peaches and growing big fruit. In comparison, peaches from other areas, such as California, seem invariably dry, mealy and tart because they must be picked green to survive traveling and won’t develop any more sugar once they are picked.
Dave at Miller Orchards has been growing peaches for a very long time and his location up against the Colorado Monument is ideal. These peaches are freestone and picked ripe and shipped in foam to insure you receive the real, juice-dripping-down-your-chin, experience of the sweet, large and juicy Colorado Peach.
All peaches are categorized by the relationship between the fruit's flesh and pit or stone. As the names subtly imply, the difference between freestone peaches and clingstone peaches is how much the fruit's flesh clings to the pit. Freestone peaches have fruit that easily pulls away from the pit, while clingstone peach flesh stubbornly clings to the pit.
